This fascinating programme, shown on Channel 4 from Monday 28 November 2011 at 9pm, follows a team of engineers, archaeologists and serving RAF officers who have assembled on the site of Stalag Luft III, the supposedly escape-proof World War II Prisoner of War camp.

A war hero who helped prisoners flee a prisoner of war camp that inspired the legendary film ‘The Great Escape’ has been killed in a car crash, it has emerged today.
Tragic Reginald Cleaver, 89, who survived two years in the notorious Stalag Luft III POW camp in Poland, died when his grey Honda Civic smashed into a tree in Coventry last Friday. (more…)

The Great Escape is one of the most celebrated stories of World War II, and the subject of an iconic film.
Of the 76 Allied airmen who famously escaped in March 1944 from POW camp Stalag Luft III, deep in Nazi Germany, all but three were recaptured. Fifty of them were then shot dead by the Gestapo, in a flagrant breach of the Geneva Convention. (more…)
For many it’s a cult Christmas movie, starring Steve McQueen, but for six lucky RAF Officers, Hollywood became a stark reality as they travelled to the former ‘Great Escape’ Camp, Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland, to re-enact activities which were carried out by Prisoners of War in their attempts to escape from the Camp during WWII. AN RAF veteran from Dorset has made an emotional return to a German Second World War prison camp to honour a comrade who was gunned down by the Gestapo after taking part in what became known as the Great Escape.
Former navigator Alfie Fripp, 94, of Southbourne, was one of six ex-prisoners to take part in a memorial event to mark the anniversary of the escape from Stalag Luft III.
