Life in the camps

To maintain discipline and to create an atmosphere of belonging, the camps were run by the PoWs along military lines, with many men being given particular roles and duties.

Alfie became the Red Cross representative at his first camp and continued in this role in every other camp he was transferred. The most important aspect of his role was the administration and distribution of the famous, and vital, Red Cross parcels… as well as the occasional “special” parcel that bore gifts for potential escapees…
